Wake up calls sometimes came in weird damn ways. They came from realizing that you'd been set back on your heels somehow, gotten put on the defensive waiting to react to events and the actions of others rather than changing events with actions yourself. They came from realizing, suddenly, that you had handed over control to someone without even noticing it ( ... )

He wasn't entirely sure what to do when he realized who it was who'd stumbled upon his hiding spot. Half of him burned with shame while the other half was glad, and his brain at that point had pretty much said 'fuck you, I'm done here' and taken an extended vacation.

"Doctor House," he finally greeted, shocked at the hoarse quality of his voice. Then again, how long had it been since he'd spoken with anyone? How long had it been since he'd even seen anyone? If anyone had come close before, he'd hidden... either in the cave or the nearby woods.

He finally stood, shakily, and gazed at him. He paused a moment, biting his lip. He knew most of what had happened... knew Kanda had vanished, as had Lenalee, knew most of his friends were gone...

Well.

Thinking about it would do no good.

He forced a smile onto his face and nodded. "It's been awhile," he rasped. "How've... how've you been?"

In a moment House had taken in every detail of Daisya's appearance that the dim light of the cave would allow, but it was the haunted-empty look in his eyes that struck him most. Sort of distant and vague: going through the motions. It was the sort of thing that House, especially given his own recent inertia, had less than no patience for.

"I'm in the market for a beach house," House said, trademark sarcasm making it clear that he was having none of the Just pretend it's all fine song and dance. "You know, some good ocean front property. Figured I'd search for it on foot. Why don't we talk about the weather next ( ... )

Daisya, not knowing what else to do, sat. He found that he'd missed House's abrasiveness a great deal... enough so that it didn't even grate on his nerves. He even smiled a little - weary, so weary, but truthfully.

"I have been," he said softly, shrugging a little. He wasn't even sure how much time had passed, though all he had to do was look in a mirror to see the hollow cheeks and darkened eyes.

When he considered why - because House would ask, he knew House - he couldn't think of anything that didn't sound pathetic even to his own ears. Heartbreak was common, and people would often stay inside for one or two days, but this?

... no, it was more. Losing his friends - his best friend and the girl he'd fallen in love with - and everything that had come before was harder than he'd ever thought it would be. Instead of facing it, he'd turn to run and hide. Pathetic.

"I decided some time away would be good," he finally said, looking down at the sand. He was more weary than he'd originally thought.

It probably wasn't something that most people would have expected of House, but he really wasn't one to be cavalier about heartbreak. He certainly wasn't enough of a romantic to believe that people loved each other forever, had perfect relationships, and never lied or cheated (especially not at nineteen years old). But he was also just enough of a romantic to know that there was no kind of pain like a broken heart.

Hell, he didn't go around admitting it to people (not least of all himself) but he had pined over the last person he'd loved for the better part of six years. He hadn't wanted to connect with anyone since. It was part of the reason that he made so much use of Princeton's professional companions: if you made sex into a business proposition you didn't have to risk the kind of feelings that led to someone getting hurt. Those sort of feelings were, as far as House was concerned, a liability. Kind of like his leg ( ... )
