Are you taking the square root of the things that you've accomplished? I like that. I often use the tilde as a hyphen or a bullet-point, despite its mathematical implications.
I often use tildes or hyphen as well, just 'cause I think they're pretty. Truthfully, the square root symbol was the closest looking thing to a check mark in the default font I use for my journal. No more significance than that.

I expect it could be distressing to someone who tends too far to the mathematical end of things to think that you had not finished those tasks, but only reduced them to the square root of their original value!
Ah, but you see, my journal is primarily for me, and while I am mathematically competent, my passion is the artistic side of things. I laugh at the distress of the mathematically-minded! ;)
