Not a warrior

I'm working on an extended metaphor for how I am experiencing cancer treatment. I do not feel like a warrior, not at all. I don't even feel like I'm fighting the cancer. If any fighting is going on, it's being done by the medical team. I'm doing something else ( Read more... )

That is a great metaphor, in my opinion much more applicable and accurate overall, though if war metaphors really work for people I guess they should keep on using them.

Your oncologist sounds like she's of the school of our daughter's pediatric oncologist, who sat down with us and explained EVERYTHING because he understood we were all geeks, and wanted knowledge, not reassurance. (And then admitted he was relieved, because he found it much harder to deal with scared patients and clueless parents. He knew how to handle children, and also knew not to treat a seventeen-year-old as a child.) It was more reassuring to be told "this thing does that and your body will probably react this way" than "don't be afraid, everything will be all right" as the doctors in the first hospital tried.

This is a very apt analogy. I like it a lot better than "battling" cancer. I'm wishing you well in your conservation efforts.
