really banal--my hand failed when I was getting a glass of water. It does that some times. I need to walk around things, just i case, but I failed this time.
The computer is not toast, but neither is it unscathed: the keyboard needs replacing and it has developed a new propensity for claiming that there's been a power surge on a hub port, which it never used to think about before. I've looked up this behavior: apparently it is a common and benign one, though it is annoying. I just have to repeatedly reset the hub ports and go on with my business.
I called my guy and he has already ordered a new keyboard. Apparently there was exactly one he could easily find for my model of laptop (Alienware 14).
Currently I am using an old (not even USB) keybpard attached with a converter, and a mouse, which is a lot of wires and balancing, but it is less slow than picking out the letters on the onscreen keyboard application, which itself was better than nothing.
