I had never really thought about the Pew report until I saw a link to this (by way of Eschaton) . I had never thoguht about "net worth" either. But really, if you think about it, I have a pretty big net worth, if you blinker yourself and just look at the assessed value of my house and how much I owe on it. In a properly-working civilization, older people *should* be more wealthy after a lifetime of work, there's something wrong if they aren't.

If you sold your house and moved to Minneapolis, I think there's a decent chance you could buy a nice little house and live indefinitely on the remainder of the proceeds, even after taxes.

Of course, you probably have no desire to move to Minneapolis, but it's another data point for how crazy the housing markets in California have become.
