I'm worried that I'm doing too much too soon too, which is why this time I just walked away instead of messing with it anymore.

OK, something a tech support person told me to do when I was in a similar fix: hold the on/off button down for several seconds and the computer will shut off. Easier than pulling the battery (which is what I had been doing).
