Do you just slice the root and bury it? (That's what I do when I buy a bunch of spring onions from the supermarket: just chop off the roots, bury, and occasionally water if I remember and can be bothered. If a food plant requires higher maintenance than that, I'd rather spend my money than my time on it.)
So far, I've just kept them in water and watched them grow. The horseradish root I bought had a couple of sprouts on it, which is what inspired me. I'm dithering about when to put it in the ground. Once I do that I'm going to water it when I remember to.
