My treat to myself for stupid long hours for the past almost three weeks is going to be a Roomba (an equivalently priced bottle of scotch was tempting...but a robotic vaccuum cleaner is more practical). After I get one run of my apartment I can loan it to you for a trial run.

Umm... yes, I am already planning on making a French Maid outfit for it, why do you ask?

If you have a decent vacuum or janitorial supply place, they might be willing to let you test-drive a couple of models. That's what my father did when he was looking for a new machine--he wound up with a janitorial brand that you've never heard of (and I can't remember the name!), but he felt it out-performed the "name brands" in his 2,000 sq foot house with two cats.

We, on the other hand, have a $150 Dirt Devil bagless upright from Best Buy, and it does fine. But we only have two small rooms with carpet--and one, being the guest bedroom, doesn't see a lot of wear. I believe the conventional wisdom about bagless machines is that the motors will burn out faster than a bagged machine...we'll cross that bridge when we come to it!

Many of the more affordable brands now make Dyson-esques that work fine.

I LOVE my Dyson Animal Ball vacuum. :-) You're welcome to borrow it for a short test run sometime, if you like.
