As much as I love Rikkai - and I do - I probably wouldn't fit in there. I'm not competitive enough. But neither do I really feel like I'd fit at Seigaku, Fudomine, Hyoutei, Yamabuki, SeiRu or Rokkaku.
From what I've seen of the new rivals, Shitenhouji, they seem to be striking a balance between the huge competitiveness and the more laid back schools. I think I'd be more likely to fit in there.
Of course, considering Shitenhouji has been in approximately three chapters, I could be entirely wrong about him.
I pick up the manga now and again. I have to admit I'm curious what Atobe will look like with his hair cut off, and his match against Ryoma was quite good; often the loser ends up looking like a weaker character, but it wasn't the case with Atobe.
I've been getting more into tv fandoms lately - Alias and possibly Veronica Mars if the fandom doesn't drive me absolutely insane - but I just got into Nana too. Yazawa Ai is almost certainly my favorite shoujo mangaka, possibly favorite mangaka overall, and the characters and their issues could keep me writing for a long time.
I'm not competitive at all, except with myself, if that makes sense. But neither am I particularly laid-back, so...
Yeah, it's the competitive thing that keeps getting me into deep water. Luckily, so far I've been competent enough to cope. I think that's what appeals to me most about Rikkai - they're so ruthlessly competent, and they don't suffer idiots (or people less than able).

I agree with your assessment of the schools - though I think Hyotei also has a strong thread of "style" in it as well.
