ahhh it looks so amazing! is this like the tardis cake, where it's intended to look pretty but no so much for consumption?

All of the small bits, like the strawberries, cherries, and leaves were made out of modeling chocolate, which isn't normally made for consumption (you can eat it, but it won't taste that great), but everything else was made from the chocolate we used for candy, so totally edible. James took it home with him last weekend and said he was going to eat the whole thing, and he looked alright when he came back Monday, heh.

OH MY GOODNESS, ANNE. OH MY GOODNESS. I am practically speechless! I am so sorry to hear about you and your sugar sculpture on the bus, but I hope you feel slightly less bad about it for having created such an amazing chocolate creation. (I can't believe that's chocolate, by the way. It looks so marzipan-y to me.) ANNE, WONDERFULNESS ABOUNDS FROM YOUR CREATIONS. Also, I am going to come to San Francisco yesterday and eat all your chocolate chip cookies, BETTER (HAVE) BE(EN) PREPARED.

Thank you so much, Claire! I can see where the marzipan comparison comes from. Tempered chocolate is shiny, but we sprayed the whole project with a thin layer of a chocolate/cocoa butter mixture that gave everything a velvet-like look. Come to SF, I will be glad to feed you cookies!

OT, but have you seen Nowhere Boy? My dad was watching it the other day and as I passed by the screen, who should I see but Andrew Buchan! Not sure how big his role was, but of course I thought of you when I saw him.

I really liked SF when I was there a few summers ago! If only it weren't so far away. But I appreciate the offer!

Haha, Anne, funny you should ask! I have seen about 10% of Nowhere Boy. I got it and searched through to find Andrew's scenes (I actually did that for Lee Pace!'s roles in The Good Shepherd and Infamous, whoops). The role was tiny, but I so appreciate that you thought of me! :-D I feel sort of bad, I think it's actually supposed to be a pretty good movie. But maybe I'll watch it one day.

Aw, that's a proper tragedy! I am sorry--I can only fathom how tiring pulling sugar must be. Having some minor knowledge sugar--very minor--I can only imagine that's it's pretty temperamental. That chocolate Very Hungry Caterpillar though? Oh man. If left to my own devices in a room with that thing for a few hours, it would disappear very quickly. That looks so awesome. The pomegranate was a nice touch.

Out of curiosity (remember long long ago when it was you asking me this question? Oh how the times have changed)--what's your go-to chocolate chip recipe? Do share please :o)

The most difficult thing about pulling sugar is that it has to be fairly hot for it to be malleable. I had a couple of silent screams today while working the sugar because I have pretty sensitive hands, so the hot sugar and I don't really agree. Chocolate, on the other hand, is manipulated at a mere 85 degrees. Oh, the halcyon days of chocolate...

I always, always make Cook's Ilustrated's perfect chocolate chip cookies when I'm in the mood for chocolate chip. Everyone who tries them really enjoys them, probably because there's a reaaalllly generous amount of butter in the recipe. Also, when I make them, I put the dough in the fridge for at least a day before baking. I tried making the dough and baking it off in one go once and the cookies didn't taste nearly as good as when I refrigerate the dough. Oh, and one more thing: I think that these cookies taste better once cooled. I know that that's pretty much the opposite of every other chocolate chip cookie, but it just is.
