Katie and Emily decided that they would meet their brother after school, whenever they can. They hated the fact that they had to leave him at home with their parents alone, but there wasn’t anything they could do right now to change the situation they were in. Instead they thought they would spend time with him anytime they could, to make sure he was okay. To make sure that he wasn’t getting everything taken out of his young body.
“It’s ok.” James said quietly, as he ate the ice cream that was starting to drip down his hand.
“So are you ok. Are mom and dad taking their anger out on you?” Emily asked as she moved forward to the edge of the bench.
James shrugged his shoulders. “Mom is angry. Dad just seems quiet.”
“James if you need to get away. You can come and have a sleep over at Jack’s house.” Katie said, handing her brother a napkin.
“Maybe, this weekend? Mom is really angry, cuz of what happened last night.”
“What happened last night? Are you ok?” Emily asked concerned.
“I’m ok. But after Naomi came over to talk to mom and dad. Mom has just been angry. “
Emily looked up at her sister, both of them shocked to hear what their little brother said.
“Did you just say Naomi was at the house?” Katie asked her eyes still glued to her twins’.
“Yeah she came over, to try and tell mom and dad that you aren’t really happy. That you miss them, but the only way you will come home is if they are ok with you being gay.” James said, as he licked the last bits of his ice cream.
Emily shook her head, shocked at what she was hearing. She had so many questions she wanted to ask her brother, but she knew he wasn’t the person she should be asking.
“What did mom and dad say?” Katie asked as James looked up at her and slowly shook his head. An action that made Emily’s heart sink into her stomach.
Naomi sat at the kitchen table; the food was placed onto the plates, as she waited for her girlfriend to come home. She knew the girl was running late, but she wanted her to be home before the food got cold. It took her 2 hours to cook the spread of food that was waiting to be eaten. As she heard the door slam, she stood up waiting for her girlfriend to walk into the kitchen.
As Emily’s body came into view, Naomi’s smile fell from her face. She could tell the redhead was angry, so she waited for her girlfriend to speak.
“Who the hell do you think you are going to talk to my parents?” Emily shouted as she threw her bag down on the floor.
Naomi opened and closed her mouth, trying to figure out how the redhead found out. She closed her eyes as she realized that the twin’s were going to meet with James. “I thought it was the right thing to do. I’m sorry I went there without telling you. But Ems even though your happy here, I know you aren’t fully happy. There is something missing.”
“Don’t you think I should be the judge of that?! If I thought something was missing, I would go try to find it.”
Naomi cringed at her girlfriend’s yelling. “But you wouldn’t want to go talk to them. I thought if I went and showed them how much I love you, how much I know you miss them, that they would realize what they are doing.”
Naomi took a step closer to the redhead. Emily shook her head. “Don’t! And what happened?”
Naomi dropped her head.
“Yeah I know! They didn’t care what you had to say. “ Emily shouted.
“Ems. I didn’t want to tell you, because I didn’t want to hurt you by knowing how your parents reacted. I’m so sorry. I thought it was the right thing.”
“You thought it was the right thing? Or you wanted me to go back home, because me living here isn’t what you wanted!” Emily said as she stared at the blonde.
“What no! Emily you being here has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. I love spending time with you! I thought there was something missing and I just wanted to help.”
Emily shook her head, tears starting to form in her brown eyes, “Well, next time maybe you should come talk to me about what might be missing.”
Naomi took a step closer to her girlfriend, “Ok. Ok, I will I promise.”
Emily looked up into sad blue eyes, “I can’t even look at you right now. You are making me angry.” She grabbed her bag, “I’m leaving, I need time to think.”
Naomi watched as her girlfriend left the kitchen and as the sound of the front door slamming sounded in her ears. Naomi fell onto the chair around the table. The meal that scattered the top of the table was long forgotten.
“She did that!” Katie shouted as she rubbed her crying sister’s back.
“I know. Why would she do that Katie? Like does it look like I’m missing something?” Emily sniffled as she wiped away her tears.
“No Ems. You are the happiest I have ever seen you. The same goes for me, I am happy too, I don’t remember a time when I was ever this happy.” Katie said, handing her sister a new tissue.
“So why would she think that?” Emily asked as she stared out at the darken night sky.
“I don’t know Ems. I don’t know.”
“I do.” Jack said from the other side of the room.
Katie and Emily looked up at the boy, “Jack!” Katie yelled at the blonde boy.
“What Katie. I know why Naomi went there. “
“Jack, stop it! Stop taking sides.” Katie said as she looked away from her boyfriend.
“I’m not taking sides. I am just saying that I know what Naomi means by seeing something missing. I see it in you too Katie.” Jack stood from the love seat and made his way over to his girlfriend.
“Jack, what are you saying?” Katie said as she stood from the couch she was sitting on.
Jack looked down at Emily then up at his girlfriend. “I see it when I look into your eyes Katie. There is something missing, even though you’re happy. There is something missing.”
“Are you really saying this to me right now?!” Katie shouted at the blue-eyed boy.
“Katie, don’t get mad I just understood when Naomi explained what she felt from Emily.”
“Did you know she went there?!”
Jack dropped his head at his girlfriend’s question.
“Oh My God! That is why she was here that night, she came to tell you! And you didn’t tell me!” Katie shouted.
“I’m sorry Katie, I just didn’t want to hurt you.” Jack’s sad eyes looked into her brown ones.
“Well guess what, you hurt me more by lying to me!” Katie turned towards Emily. “Come on Ems. We are getting out of here.”
Emily stood grabbing her twin’s hand as they started towards the door.
“Where are you going?!” Jack yelled after them.
Katie stopped at the doorway, looking back at the boy she loved, “Anywhere but here.”
Freddie sat on the blonde’s bed as he waited for her to return to her room. He spotted her notebook, a place where she kept her writings. He smiled as he picked the book up, he remembered reading the notebook when they were younger. He opened the notebook, allowing a folded up piece of paper to fall onto his lap. Curious he opened up the piece of paper, reading the contents it held.
Naomi walked into her bedroom, her eyes falling on her best friend. Her notebook was in his lap as his eyes read what was written. “Hey, here.” She said as he handed him a beer.
She sat down on the chair, opening her own beer.
“Nay, did you write this?” Freddie asked as he held up the piece of paper.
“Yeah, it is in my notebook.” Naomi said taking a long sip of her beer.
“Has Emily read this?” Freddie asked, as he once again scanned the words on the paper.
“Are you crazy?!” Naomi said.
“Naomi, this is beautiful. If she read this, she wouldn’t have a choice but to come back to you. I never knew you loved her this much.”
“Whatever Freds.” Naomi shook her head as she let more beer slide down her throat.
“Or maybe you could show her parents. If they read this, they would be really heartless to not understand what is between you and Ems.” Freddie shook the piece of paper as he spoke.
“Now I know your crazy! No one will ever see that! So put it away and drink with me.”
Freddie nodded his head as he closed the notebook, cracking open his beer, the piece of paper, burning a hole into his pocket.
Jack stood up quickly from the couch as he heard his door open. He turned on the light startling the redhead.
“Gezz. Jack. What the hell!” Katie yelled, as she held her hand over her heart.
“Its late Katie.” Jack said, ignoring her previous statement.
“Yeah well, I was hoping you would already be in bed. I’m going to sleep on the couch tonight. I am still mad at you.” Katie said, as she made her way over to his couch.
“No Katie, take my bed. I will sleep on the couch. I’m sorry for what I did.”
Katie made her way up the stairs, “Yeah I am to Jack. I am too.”
Naomi woke up when she heard someone enter her room. “Emily?”
The person didn’t answer her as they tried to make their way around her room in the dark. Naomi shook her head as she reached over to turn on her bedside lamp. The light filled the room to reveal that it was indeed her girlfriend.
“I just came to grab my pjs.” Emily said not making eye contact with the blonde.
“Where are you going?” Naomi asked as she stood from her bed.
“To sleep on the couch. I still can’t believe you did what you did Naomi. I trusted you to tell me everything.”
“Don’t sleep on the couch. You can have my bed. I’ll sleep on the couch. But I want to talk to you about what happened. I want you to understand why I did what I did.” Naomi grabbed her girlfriend’s hand.
Emily pulled her hand away, “Don’t Naomi. I need time to think about this, and it’s late.”
“Ems…” Naomi begged as she looked at her girlfriend.
“I’m tried so are you going to sleep on the couch or am I?” Emily asked ignoring the girl’s pleading.
The blonde made her way over to the doorway of her bedroom, “Good night, I love you.” She said before she walked out of the room.
He stood in front of the doorway, the morning sun starting to warm his body. He held a piece of paper in his hands. He knew that what the paper said could change everything. He took a deep breath, allowing his fist to knock loudly on the door in front of him.
As four people woke up separate from each other, the future of their relationships up in the air. A single boy held the one piece of paper that could change their four lives forever.
