We may eventually be on a DVD of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain's performance at the Proms! I went along with my brother and his friends, and some people working with the Orchestra came up to us in the queue, presumably intrigued by the fact that no fewer than six of us were carrying ukuleles (they are like an infectious disease; with the ( Read more... )

"Play" implies skill. I hit the strings with my fingers and sometimes something resembling music comes out. XD I want to form a ukulele-based punk band, ideally.

Pfft, you can get away with not being much good on the ukulele. Ukuleles make people happy regardless. I'm not great, and I certainly can't sing, but playing the ukulele is so much fun that I do not care.

Ukuleles are quite affordable instruments! You should be able to get a not-great-but-playable beginner's ukulele for less than twenty pounds, and the one I use at the moment, a Lanikai LU-21, cost me only forty-five and I adore it. Also they are extremely portable and made entirely of joy.

You do make a very convincing argument for a ukulele purchase!

Are you considering it? I do hope you are.

(I am perhaps overinvested in getting everyone in the world to own a ukulele, but I feel it would be a much happier world with more ukuleles in it.)

Kind of! I was looking them up, but the issue is that I'm thinking, "Do I really want to spend over fifty dollars on an instrument I've never played before?" and though there are some cheaper ones I don't want to get a bad one...

Hmmm, that's a good question. If you do decide to get one, though, I've got a Lanikai LU-21 soprano, and I'd definitely recommend it.

Have you ever tried playing a sad song on the ukulele? It is extremely difficult to keep it from sounding incredibly cheery. Oh, ukuleles.
