Okay, diving guru... Do they make custom masks or something, because in my entire life I've never been able to wear a mask without it leaking so fast that it's practically pointless. It's my big cheeks. :(
Yeah they make all kinds for all different faces. I'd suggest going to a dive shop and trying different brands. Or better yet, if you are somewhere like here or catalina (high tourist beach activity area) rent a few types. Snorkel rentals are like 10 bucks a day.
I have the mares liquid skin mask. I'd suggest trying that one if you are serious about a mask. It's a higher priced mask (around 80 to 150 depending on where you get it) but the latex is so soft and form fitting I can wear it with a moderate length beard. Its awesome!
You thinking about getting certified? Or just for fun?
I'm pretty sure scuba diving would give me a panic attack, actually. It's kind of like reverse claustrophobia. Oddly enough, I'm quite comfy in a sub.
I doubt I'll ever spend any money on a real mask. I was just curious because trying to go snorkeling on our honeymoon was an excercise in frustration. I tried multiple masks and they all leaked so fast that I was having to monkey with it at two minute intervals. It sucked!
i've heard that claustrophobia thing as being a very common reason as to why people don't snorkel or scuba dive....or rather why they attempt it and freak out or stop. I don't get it. :/ but i guess it's just like any other phobia..it's an irrational fear.
i think your mask problems were two fold....
1.) rental gear pretty much always sucks in at least one way or another. if it's shared gear, there's always the dipshit who knowingly (or unknowingly sometimes) fucks it up cause if it's not theirs, they just don't care. I used a rental mask for snorkeling earlier in the trip (I was dumb and didn't think to bring mine) and it was fogging up and crappy the whole time.
