I sent an application for what amounts to freelance translating job.

I got an answer that amounts to "Your application was very good, but we feel the irregular hours wouldn't work with your current location". I live <1h commute away. A commute I have done on more or less regular basis for my studies for five years now ( Read more... )

Yeah, that does sound like it's intended to be a gentle letdown. But! No point wasting the chance that it might not be. So you could reply going "Thank you for considering me for the role of [whatever it was], and for informing me of your decision so promptly. If any other positions arise at [wherever] that you feel would be suitable for me, please bear me in mind. I am happy to attend [wherever] as required, as I am accustomed to making the journey for my university studies." That way they should get the message that, duh, you can commute, without feeling you're hectoring them.

Haw! If they think 1hr is bad, try 4hrs commute, which a few people do in our little town to work in the big city of L.A.

I get mistaken as a high schooler under 18 ditching/runaway by the police v_v; Plus my ID card is checked to see if it is a fake a few times... Plus, I was marked as the forever freshman in 2 colleges :D
