Dearest Doctor Elizabeth Weir,
I send you many happy greetings from Earth. I do not know if you remember me, Vala Maldoran, we met when I travelled to Atlantis with SG-1. I was the fun one that found the hologram and helped figure out the whole puzzle for my dear Daniel. I enjoyed exploring your city, even if there wasn’t any treasure to be found. Oh, I know Daniel said the knowledge and all that, but between us girls, we know that the best treasures glimmer, sparkle and shine when you hold them up to the light, don’t we?
As you probably know, I am not from Earth, but I think of it as my home now. One of my favorite things about wintertime on Earth is the holidays. Learning about the different traditions is very interesting.
You are probably wondering why I am writing to you. Well, when we were having lunch today, Cameron mentioned that you must be very homesick at this time of year, all of the people on the Atlantis mission must be. You don’t have all the things I have come to love about the season there. No snow, no malls, no shopping! Not even internet shopping, which must be dreadful. Oh, I know you can go to the various markets on the trading worlds, but it isn’t the same. There is nothing quite like a mall. So I decided to send you a Christmas card.
I hope that you like the card. I find the dancing penguins on the front to be quite amusing. But then again, penguins in general are simply amusing creatures. I love the way they waddle. Cameron said that I should include a note with the card and not just sign it “from Vala” because it would be boring that way.
I wonder what you miss the most about Earth, being so far away. I grew up without any kind of holiday traditions, and without much of a home, so I don’t have very many wistful feelings or memories to feel sick about. But I do understand the concept, and after seeing how much Earth has to offer, I can easily see how you would miss your home at this time of year.
One of the things both Sam and Cameron said they consider an important part of their holiday traditions in Christmas Cookies. I did not know why Christmas Cookies are different than cookies at other times of the year, and it confused me. So I sent an email to Cameron’s mother Wendy and asked her, because she is a very good baker. Her pie is delightful! She explained that you can’t really buy Christmas Cookies in the supermarket. She said that most people have recipes that are special to their families and the taste of those particular cookies mean Christmas.
I don’t know what cookies were special to your family, but I thought that one of the things you might miss would probably be Christmas cookies. So, I asked around the base and collected recipes for cookies that were special to different people. Then Sam and Cameron and I commandeered the base kitchen and we made a lot of cookies! And a mess. But we had fun.
I’ve included a tin of cookies for you, a little taste of Earth. I hope that one or two of the different cookies in this tin evoke memories of your home and your holidays.
Happy holidays, Doctor Weir.
With warmest regards
Vala Maldoran
