Intoxication - Chapter 1
The older boy just stood there, with his eyes focused on him. "What are you doing?" He said.
Nino too had gone frozen. He knew at that moment he was already done for. As the boy stepped closer to Nino, the blue scent got even stronger. "Hey, what are you doing?" The voice echoed.
All that Nino could see was blue. Then, suddenly, his mind went blank...

Nino pressed the doorbell long and hard. "Yes," A voice came out from the doorbell's speaker. "Who's there?"
"It's me," Nino replied.
Not even a split second, the door in front of him suddenly swung open. "Nino, you're finally here!" Aiba said with a huge smile on his face.
"Yeah," Nino said. "It kinda took me a while to get my work done."
"Come in!" Aiba then led Nino inside the living room.
"Your new apartment's really great."
"Isn't it?" Aiba laughed. "It's the exact reason I bought it."
Just looking around made Nino a little dizzy; it was very spacious. The living room had a black and white monochrome interior: light grey shiny walls like metal, a black sofa, a small coffee table. The room also had a wide, flat screen television which was hanging on the wall, and a book shelf right beside it. On the very top of the book shelf, Nino noticed a white cyclindrical object.
He then walked towards it, "Hey, what's this?" Without hearing an answer from Aiba, Nino presses the button of the object. It then started blinking green light and, suddenly, uttered a high-pitched beep. The object started to produce what appears to be like mist into the air.
As he inhaled the mist, Nino immediately covered his face. "Too bright, too bright!" he exclaimed.
Aiba quickly went to where he was and turned the object off. "I'm sorry," he said. "Was the air freshener too strong?"
"Gosh, seriously!" Nino said, as he rubbed his nose. Nino always had problems with strong smells; the stronger the smell is, the brighter and bolder the color he would see.
Ever since he was young, Nino could see the color of scents. He was very fascinated by it. However, it took him a while to realize that no one else could see the colors. His peculiar ability made him feel alienated; during Kindergarden, he tried to explain it to his friends, hoping they would understand but were instead weirded out.
Only Aiba, his childhood friend, was the one who didn't see him as an outsider. "That's cool," was the young Aiba's reaction. "I wish I had superpowers like you."
Aiba took a box filled with cans of beer from the fridge and placed it on the coffee table. He took out two and gave one of them to Nino, who was now sitting on the sofa. "Thanks," Nino opened the can and took a sip.
"So, how are things going for you?" Aiba sat beside him.
"Okay, I guess. I finally got a stable job."
"A bomb-sniffer?" Aiba teased.
"Knock it off."
"I'm kidding. What job did you get?"
"Porter." Nino repled. Aiba blinked a few times at him, with his eyebrows furrowed. "You know, uh, the guy who carries luggage in the hotel." Nino explained.
"Ohhhh, so that's what they're called." Aiba then nods. "So, you work in a hotel?"
"Yeah; the Kitagawa Hotel."
Aiba's eyes widened. "You mean, the Kitagawa hotel? That big time hotel?"
"Yes, that hotel." Nino nodded.
"Wow!" Aiba exclaimed. "I heard they're planning to expand in Hawaii soon. Well, anyway, I'd say good luck to you in being a porter." He winked at Nino.
"Yeah, good luck to me." He said, smirking.
"But, not to offend you or anything, why don't you just get a job where you can use your smelling ability? Maybe that way your life could get a bit easier!"
Nino sighed. "I want to. But, at the same time, I don't." he said and crushed the now empty can of beer with his hand. "I really don't want any exposure of my condition."
"I understand." Aiba nodded.
In fact, Aiba is only one, other than his family, who knows about his ability. After telling others his ability, and being isolated because of it, Nino decided never to speak of it to anyone else, and plans to do that for as long as he lives.
But, even if he tries to ignore it, the colors would always flash in front of his vision. It's difficult for Nino to blend in because of it. Deep down, his special ability for him is a burden. It has always been a burden...especially ever since that day.

"By the way, is it true that Jun moved in to your apartment?" Aiba said, a bit drowsy, and took his last sip of beer-- his fourth can of beer.
"It's true." Nino said, stopping at his second can of beer, as he crushes it again. "Actually, I was quite surprised when he just barged in to the room. He suddenly came to my place with his belongings that day!"
"Hey, at least you won't be lonely when you return home!" Aiba nudged Nino with his elbow. "I also want some company with me. Do you mind if you could introduce me to someone?"
"Me? Come on, why don't you just do it yourself?"
"You know my type, Nino." Aiba continued, ignoring Nino's complains. "Someone to have fun with and have a good time."
Nino didn't say anything and just rolled his eyes.
"And who knows, maybe you could sniff them out for me."
"That's not how it works." Nino glared at him. Aiba laughed mockingly.
Nino then starts to feel his phone from his pocket vibrating. He takes it out and the first thing he sees is: Jun, 1 new message.
'Just arrived at home. Brought some leftover pizza from co-worker's b-day party. Hungry?'
Nino quickly types, 'Totally. Wait for me; I'll be there soon.'
"Want another round?" Aiba says, offering Nino another can of beer.
"No, can't." Nino said. He then stood up from his seat. "I have to go. Jun's waiting for me at home."
"Suit yourself." He says and opens the can and drinks from it. "Well, thanks for stopping by." He then lies down on the sofa, putting his legs on where Nino was seated earlier. "And please, lock the door for me."
"No problem. See ya." Nino then walks toward the door.
"Oh, by the way," Aiba called out. "You don't mind if I see you around when I stay in the hotel?"
"Come anytime." He said and grinned. "Let's see if you could sniff me out."
