Surely they knew that going in, though, right? They must have some trick up their sleeves since "iPhone" has been trademarked from before the iMac came out.
It's weird. The whole thing is starting to sound like a flop. An expensive handset, tied to a single, expensive provider, with poor battery life (!!!), limited extensibility and second-rate functionality (no GPS, crappy camera, etc...). It looks pretty slick, but other than that it doesn't have much going for it.
The iPod was a success because Apple was really the first big-name company that built an MP3 player. While not truly the first-mover, their marketting department expanded the MP3 player market enough that they effectively have the first-mover advantage in the minds of most. Here they've got to go up against Nokia and Motorolla, who are bigger and have a lot more experience in the market.
This smells like a trainwreck. Maybe Jobs has started believing too much of his own BS?
