Dog & Cat food recall

My advice (and I'm taking it): Feed a home-cooked or raw diet for your companion animals. While it won't eliminate all food-associated problems (not much will), it will limit concerns.

After Mina's bag of food is gone, I'm no longer feeding her any type of food that isn't locally produced. She will be put on a home-cooked diet. I am writing this as ( Read more... )

raw diet, mina

I agree with you. I am terrified by all of this crap. The company we are using now (after returning a dozen cans of Nutro) doesn't use wheat or rice, but I have very little faith in any major brand now. We have a TON of dry food left and I don't want to waste it, but once that is gone I will start making food myself.

I can't remember if you feed Lola a vegetarian diet or not? There are a couple of veg dog food books available, but I haven't read them ( ... )

Thanks for all the great info :) I'm going to email the list to myself at work so I can print it out and use it as an ordering guideline. I want to get copies for myself and the store.

Thanks for those sources. I am greatly considering feeding Maizie home cooked meals. Can you tell me what you plan on feeding the Miners?

It's sad that it's such a risk every time someone pick up a bag of dog food. :(

i used to feed completely raw, but i just don't have the ambition or presense of mind to do it anymore. the portioning, the packaging, the freezing, the thawing, it was just a pita. i guess i'm a lazy dog owner, but i'm going to keep sticking with the kibbles that i feel are safe, and keep my fingers crossed :-/

I annoyed that Mina's expensive dog food sources a couple ingredients from China. That's just stupid and annoying.

I'm at this point where it's important I know where Mina's food comes from. I have a hard time feeding her meat (I'm vegan), and I feel I need to KNOW the animals whose lives are unfairly (imo, not to Mina, of course) are taken. Even with my organic dog food, the chickens did not live a happy life, as short as it was.

I came up with a lot of excuses.

Combined with not knowing how the animals were treated and this new problem with getting ingredients from across the world, I cannot excuse myself any longer.

You, of course, rock. :)

aw, thanks! i couldn't handle not knowing *exactly* what was in the food, and now with all this stuff, i'm even more sure i wouldn't feed kibble :P i am glad of the opportunity to tell people about feeding home cooked diets, though...

okay, so i've been thinking we're pretty safe because we (and by we, i mean my two piglets cattens eat dry food and not wet food. should i be concerned? (i'm going to start investigating local cat food right now.)
