small steps forward

Since my last update Mr. Darcy and I went to Scotland with family, viewed another property, and talked with financial planner about next steps. Scotland (and London) was a fabulous trip and we really want to go back, particularly to Skye. Mr. Darcy liked Edinburgh, even, which surprised me. He's not a fan of cities ( Read more... )

Wow--I'm excited /and/ terrified just reading this, so I can only imagine how you're feeling. Good luck to you both, whichever one you choose!

Thanks! It helps that we've done a lot of research, talked to people who've done similar things, etc. Having professional advice makes a big difference, too.

The property on the lake sounds exciting to me. With 40 acres you'd have the ability to pretty much ignore your neighbors (i.e., the benefit of isolation) when you feel like it, while with the lake nearby you'll still be part of a community for times when you want-- or need-- the benefits of socialization.

That's pretty much what we're thinking. The other place is basically surrounded by uninhabited forest; the closest neighbor is a small cattle ranch a quarter mile down the hill. The biggest likely issue is that Weyerhaeuser is starting to allow recreational activity in their adjoining forest, so we'd need to put up (and enforce) no trespassing signs.

Either would be great for some of the noisier activities we plan to get up to (pagan bonfires and the like).

There's not a huge amount of it, just a stand of trees next to the lake since it likes water, but I did point out to Mr. Darcy that siting any sort of camping structure under those trees would be a bad idea. (They drop limbs like whoa.)
