So something awful happened in the DC universe this week and one of the things the reaction has reminded me of is just how great it is to have a network of other fans to fall back on at times like this.

Here's what I keep wondering, though: would there be fandom without the actions of the clueless knuckleheads? Would we all be here today if Doyle never sent Sherlock Holmes over the Reichenbach Falls?

I like the way you put that--that there's this seed that goes back to the moments when tragedy struck and people couldn't bear it. I think it's interesting that you really need serialization, IMHO, for this kind of energy to be produced. Any one movie or play or book that ends in tragedy just doesn't have the emotional energy behind it--no one is going to take to the streets to protest Romeo and Juliet's death or Thelma and Louise's. But give people bits of story over time and the investment is so much higher, and people freak out when Little Nell or Sherlock or Phil Coulson or...everyone (LOL Blakes 7) dies ( ... )
