Wow, I've NEVER thought of h/c like that, re: extreme hurt. For me, I always think of someone being hurt/sick/emotionally distraught and the other character consoles them in one form or another. I thought that's the definition of h/c! I mean sheesh, there's a BIG difference between h/c and sado-masochism.

That's what I thought, especially coming from gen fic where h/c scenarios were about the only way to get a fix of that 'comradely' love. I figured, in slash it would be more of the same only things might progress to the heroes getting even more, nicely, intimate. And there was some fic like that, but most of the crowd I fell in with had a decided preference for sadistic situations. Sadly, I was very young and impressionable, and figured that was probably the 'norm,' and happily moved onto other fandoms in time.

I remember some slash fans even hated h/c because, according to them, it was written by people who didn't have the balls to commit to slash, to sex. Never really got that one, either.

Yes, I too thought it meant that one character was hurt (emotionally, physically, etc.) by an outside force/person, and then the other character nurses him back to health/life. I wasn't aware that there was an interpretation that had the one character hurting the other, then falling in love. Huh.

We look forward to your next litter of plot bunnies!

It might be different now, hope so anyway. Or maybe that attitude was restricted to the one particular fandom (that wouldn't actually be a surprise). Near as I can remember, the object of slash, or het stories there was to demonstrate the dominance of one partner over another, to destroy not to love. That's why I didn't start to feel comfortable writing/reading slash until I had left that fandom far behind and stumbled into Highlander, and even then, it was Oz and B/K that really cemented things.
