I was also bothered by the "protecting" comment and Dave wanting to punch the bowling guy. Too late, Dave. The line from the deleted scene, where a cop says that Ben "stole Dave's girlfriend," also pissed me off. Ben didn't steal anyone, you jackass. No wonder he's afraid of you guys when you all act like that.

I did like this episode more than most people. But I still don't see the point of bringing back Dave in the first place.

As for the Tom/Ann stuff, I mentioned this on Tumblr but basically, I'm so frustrated about women's issues in politics today that I just can't work up any anger over what Tom and Ann did or didn't do.

Adam Scott, though? Amazing in this episode.

This, seriously. I don't get why people seem to be expecting TOM to be a feminist character suddenly when he never has been. Give me a break. Yeah, he was obnoxious, but Ann telling him he wore her down does not exactly equal him forcing her to sleep with him despite her saying no, let alone the show endorsing that kind of behaviour. People are a little nuts about that.

Exactly. And honestly, is there a sitcom on TV--heck, any show--that has been more consistently feminist than Parks? I really think that they've earned the benefit of the doubt here.

That is an excellent point. I'm personally more bothered by how obnoxious he was being because I know Tom can be more genuine than that, so it was frustrating. And I had higher hopes for this story going in.

I actually enjoyed the episode more the second time I watched it, because I was less tense about the things I was worried about and more open to the stuff that was actually really funny.

Yeah, like I said, I was lukewarm about the Dave plot, not super enraged or anything. Maybe he's been regretting since he left that he wasn't more clear about his feelings and that contributed to the whole thing. But whoever said he behaved like a tv character was spot on ( ... )

Ooh, I would love to read that. I love the idea of building out that backstory.

Maybe it was diaphenia who made the tv character point? Not sure. It was a great line, and, on rewatch, the person who was least "tv character-ish" was actually Leslie. Which is a tad unusual and which explains the awesome line endorsing 10 beers into her mouth. Tough evening for our girl.

Yeah, I noticed that too! It was almost the craziest part of the episode--Leslie as the calm reasonable person. Although she really could have nipped that dinner situation in the bud by just taking Dave aside for a minute to reject him instead of avoiding being alone with him. But she was unusually calm.

The Partridge backstory was a really tiny part of the fic--It was an April/Ben sort-of friendship story set between seasons 2 and 3, with April staying in Pawnee as an assistant to the task force. But I learned that April is a really difficult character to write, even though I feel like I relate to her a lot. So it was a big mess and then the season started and I got completely distracted by other things. But I might try to go back to it someday.

You know, of course, that I completely agree with your Tom/Ann thoughts. Blerg. Re-watching the episode, I was struck by two things: one, I actually liked it a lot better than I did initially, especially the Leslie/Ben/Dave stuff (Dave came off far less aggressively on second viewing?) and b) Tom/Ann would have been just fine if it weren't for the last bit of singing/"you wore me down". Because right before that he apologizes and looks like he's going to be genuine with her and she's willing to hear him out! So if they had decided to make it a sincere moment it would have coloured their entire relationship so differently ( ... )
