I like to think that Ben is also a fan of the Minnesota Wild and can totally related to your story (I'm an Anaheim Ducks fan, though that's been hard this year).

Have you seen the new deleted scene with Ben turning down the accounting job? Jean-Ralphio must be so proud.

You make some great points about the polling and the behavior of Barnes and Elizabeth. One thing that would have been great to see in this episode is the Pawnee Journal coverage of the scandal--we missed out on a great headline, I'm sure. The Dexhart issue has bothered me too, and I'd like to see the show address it.

Oh no, a Ducks fan? The thing I try to forget about 2003 was that after we fought our way to the Western Conference finals, the Ducks ... swept us. I think Giguere shut us out three games in a row. It was shameful (although honestly we had no business being there in the first place.) (Hockey is my other big obsession. Don't know how that crept in here. Underdog stories!)

Yeah, I really wanted to see what the media were doing, because it felt like part of the story was missing. But they had 22 minutes to work with, so I can see how they didn't have time to address that. But still! One second-long shot of a Pawnee Journal headline--they so could have fit that in. Maybe they're waiting to show us the media coverage until after the hiatus.

I grew up in Orange County and live in San Diego, so geography : ). Don't feel bad, Giguere shut out everybody--remember, he got the MVP despite the Ducks losing.

Ooh, I hope we get more media post-hiatus. I miss Joan and Perd. Shauna is OK now that she's no threat to Leslie : ).

I so want to see the look on Shauna's face when her editor sends her out to cover a bit sex scandal story ... involving that cute guy she tried to flirt with. Awkward!

Actually I like to think Ben and Shauna met again at some point and that Ben explained that he was still getting over a breakup and wasn't ready to date anyone else, and Shauna appreciated him being upfront about that and not leading her on or using her for rebound sex or whatever Mark would have done to her. And so even though nothing romantic ever happened, there's some good will there, and she has always liked Leslie, and now she will help them tell their side of the story in a sympathetic way.

I think this post is excellent even though I have absolutely no concept of hockey (though we took the cup two years ago! Maybe? I feel like someone told me that).

I am most fascinated on a personal level with seeing how this episode changed your feelings on Leslie/City Council. Who knows where we will be at the end of the season when we will know for certain how the election will go? I was inclined to think that we weren't going there, but the permanence of the Ron Swanson CC room verses the fleeting candy Parks Department makes me wonder...

Ooh, good observation! Hmm.

Yes, your team won the cup in 2010. And I think plays my team tomorrow night? Hockey is my other obsession, but I am the weirdest sports fan. I like interesting story arcs and characters there too ... honestly it's a good thing I found fandom because it makes a lot more sense as an outlet for that.

Anyway. I'm glad they found a way to make people like me excited for the campaign plot. If they make me believe that this is really what she wants, then I will want it for her too. But I'm feeling good that even if they have her lose, they'll find a way to do it that won't leave us totally sobbing. Actually, we'll probably be sobbing no matter what, because that's what we do. But hopefully in a good way.

As always, I loved reading your insights on the episode! I know what you mean about feeling a sudden burst of excitement regarding Leslie's campaign. There was something about the way she expressed her desire (maybe it was how she compared it to her current position?), that really made me feel her want and consequently want it for her even more. I still think I'd be OK with her staying with the parks department if it were her decision after a long internal parks vs. office debate (a promotion would be swell too), but now I know how truly devastated I would be if she actually lost. I'm so intrigued by how they're going to handle this. And excited ( ... )

Yeah, there was something about that scene in the restaurant with Ann that was more convincing to me than the dream talk. Just her referring to it as a job gave it some weight that it didn't have in my mind before. I wasn't sure before now if maybe she had just gotten swept away by the idea of being asked to do it, and of people voting for her, and the honor of being elected to serve her city. There was just something in that little scene that suggested it was more than that, that she had compared the two jobs and really wanted one over the other. And if she wants it, I want it for her. And I want her to prove the naysayers wrong. I have no idea where this story is going to go now, but I'm really excited about it ( ... )

One thing I wonder about the new, grassroots campaign--I assume that theoretically they are all doing this on their free time, but won't it appear kind of fishy that Leslie's entire campaign staff are all government employees? Wouldn't it appear as though a branch of the government (or two, if we count Ann separately) is endorsing a candidate? That strikes me as probably not cool, although I admit I know basically nothing about campaigning.

Yeah, I've seen people bring up that point elsewhere that that could be either unethical or downright illegal, but I'm thinking the show will just kind of gloss over that. Maybe they'll at least try not to have everyone working on the campaign during work hours (even though they sort of already did that during Born & Raised). But I'm thinking they might choose to overlook it in the same way they fudge the ethics of the hiring policies, just to give characters stories together.

Major Nerd Moment Alert

Someone on TWOP mentioned the Hatch Act, so I googled it and found "state and local employees: permitted activities" include "campaign for or against candidates in partisan elections, make campaign speeches for candidates in partisan elections, distribute campaign literature in partisan elections
volunteer to work on a partisan political campaign ..."

Etc. So I guess they're probably ok as long as they're not using salaried time or throwing around their government employee titles.
