The only thing I'd add is that we also do a surprising amount of subconscious lip-reading, even without special training. It may not allow us complete understanding in the absence of the accompanying sound, but it can give a big boost to understanding when paired with that aural input.
I feel bad at how much Japanese I've forgotten, and it wasn't ever as strong as I would have liked in the first place. I'd like to find a job I could use it in, but I'm so out of practice that it would be difficult.
Naturally, I was afraid that they were going to drag things down and... well, basically "Japan" things up, which usually isn't a good thing.
I suddenly have the urge to add "Japannation" to the urban dictionary, with the definition being something along the lines of: "When a visit from management from overseas causes one to feel as if they have bored a hole in their head."
