Well, I'm not going to knitting group anymore. Tonight was just kind of the last straw. I'm tired of being the closet conservative and listening to all their liberal bullshit. At first it was just the one woman who pissed me off. Not a single week goes by that she doesn't make some blatantly rude anti-religious or anti-conservative comment. ( Read more... )

I'm always amazed at people who can't take a hint.
Being a libertarian who comes from a republican family, I learned a long time ago what its like to be an outsider. I empathize with you, and wish that you could find people who are like-minded, or at least polite enough to know that one doesn't discuss religion, politics or money in a group setting.

It's like that EVERYWHERE here. It's like they love government to the exclusion of all else--they have nothing else to talk about! On the bus, in a restaurant, at work... and random strangers will come up and want you to join in their liberal love-fest. THe problem is, this area is so incredibly liberal (we're talking about the ONLY state Mondale won in '84) that they take for granted that opposing viewpoints exist. They are used to saying whatever pops into their heads without anyone objecting. And when anyone DOES disagree, they are so unused to it that they don't know how to have a polite ideological discussion and instead resort to personal attacks.

I don't know how you can go about your day if you get this pissed off whenever people start talking about their political views. I mean it bugs me the way a lot of people automatically assume that you agree with them 100%, because that usually leads to some unintended insults. But instead of being the closet conservative and just sitting there awkwardly, why not offer an opposing view? You're pretty coherent with your thoughts and unlike the usual Bible-thumping Republicans who offer no logical reasoning to back the things they say, the way you voice your opinions makes sense to everyone. If you aren't willing to do that, then just ignore them and don't let it get to you, ya know?

If you'd read the above, you'd see I DID voice an opinion and I got treated like shit because of it.

Yeah I kinda did read it and I was referring to: "I'm tired of being the closet conservative and listening to all their liberal bullshit." One prick arguing with you about the public school system seems like a different situation entirely.

Bah, whatever.
