Title: And so it begins
Word Count: 1178
Summary: It's a fic that I wrote for one of the prompt communities but it's about Claire and her Rift Ability. I wrote a small fic awhile ago where she caused a flower to wither by touching it when the ticking was going on. In this one, Claire gets herself into a bit of trouble when some CLF supporters decide to attack her when the ticking is going on and Claire comes to realize just what she can do.
----------
It's just one of those days where you know everything is going to go wrong.
Claire should have guessed it from the moment she woke up and heard the ticking. It was in the back of her mind, ticking angrily and picking at her. Like a tiny little gnat chewing away and it made it hard to focus but she needed to. There couldn't be anything wrong with her. Her dad told her all the time that it was all about control, right? She needed to control herself and she needed to control whatever was going on with her but it made it hard when there was a constant ticking like a bomb ready to go off.
Tick, tick, tick.
But she forced herself through her day. She fixed a smile on her face but it felt like oil that was ready to slide off of her at any moment. She felt wrong as she pushed herself through her day and everything that came with it. She went shopping to get the groceries that she needed and to get a jacket to replace the one she had given to Phoebe to wear. It didn't matter that she had had the strongest urge to take a young cashier and slam her head into her register when she moved a little too slow.
It's all about control after all.
But she can't be held responsible for other people when they didn't want to exert the same control that she had been struggling hard to hold onto all day. Honestly, she should have seen them coming. She had seen the small group of men all day, off and on. She had seen them outside of a store and then again near a cafe where she had gotten herself a drink. She had felt their eyes on her as she crossed a street and no mind reading was needed to know that they were up to something.
"Hey freak." One of the three men called out to her as they fell into line behind her like a nasty old cloak. It was bad on her for glancing over in reaction because if she had been smarter, she would have ignored them but patience was not a blessing today.
"See, told you she would look." The blond man nudged his friend. "She's gotta be one of them." The sneer on his face was hard and cruel, filled with hate.
For a moment, Claire thought of the Hunter and the way he had hated them without really knowing anything. A chill followed by a hot flash swept over her body as she felt urges she shouldn't be feeling but she tried to ignore them, and the men, as she clutched her bag closer to her while quickening her step. She wasn't going to be so lucky though as the three men hurried after her, keeping pace.
"Wait up." One commanded but she ignored him and so he decided to make her pay attention. He reached out, grabbing the bag in her arms and a quick wrench of his wrist sent everything crashing to the floor as she jumped a little to miss stepping on a few oranges that bounced across her path.
"Leave me alone." It wasn't a plea, it was a hissed command as she shot the man a look and then bent down to start reaching for her food but a well placed knee to the spot just below her arm knocked her over as a grunt escaped her. Her hand skidded over the pavement as she caught herself from falling over completely before she looked up through a curtain of blond curls at the man's smug, laughing face. They were like high school bullies surrounding a weak target, pushing and joking with each other as they practically clapped each other on the back for a job well done.
They weren't so proud when she lunged up, catching the main antagonist across the face with a well paced punch that knocked him back in surprise. It didn't take him down and she was disappointed but she didn't get long to be smug as the other two lunged for her. As indestructible as she was, she couldn't stop from getting hurt and so there was no stopping the one man as he slammed her into the wall hard enough to crack her head off the rough brick. It didn't hurt though and that was something she could use against them as there was no pain to stun her. Still, she was overwhelmed by numbers and the ticking which got louder in her head as it started to reach the pitch of a drum banging away.
It's just one of those days where you know something will go wrong and she had to wonder if the blond guy had seen it coming as well. When he slammed her into the wall hard enough to knock her to the ground, he should have guessed his day was about to go south even if Claire hadn't planned on doing anything to him besides hurting him enough to try and get away. But when she reached out to grab onto him, neither one of them had been expecting what happened next.
It was like he was a puppet and she had grabbed all the strings to pull them tight. With a swift intake of breath, he arched painfully, almost like a contortionist, as every muscle in his body spasmed before going as hard as stone. As she held onto him, the strangest sensation swept over her like a rush or a wave. It stole her own breath as she felt like she had been splashed with ice cold water; a much different sensation than when she was healing and everything seemed to go hotter. She heard his two friends call out in surprise and shock but it didn't matter by the time they reached him.
As she let go, she seemed to have let go of the strings and he relaxed so much that he merely crashed to the ground in a crumpled heap. His two friends fell to their knees beside him, reaching out and calling his name. It was a name that was going to stick with her for awhile. She watched, the horror growing inside of her and echoing in their eyes as they looked at her before one managed to whisper. "He's dead." No one understood how.
No one knew except for Claire whose mind flickered back to the flower that had withered when she touched it. It was the first time she had realized the hint of her Rift ability and now she was starting to get the full scope of it. Gasping, she pushed to her feet, scrambling a little as she grabbed for her purse and started to run. The men never chased her; they were too shocked by what they had seen and what had happened. As Claire ran, she didn't even think about how the ticking was gone now.
As she ran, it was silent in her head.
