the food industry's product dating is vague and not very helpful. currently they say things like "best by september 2005". i don't know what that means; it leaves room for doubt: can i eat this? should i eat this? the consumer is unsure ( Read more... )

Some things, don't even bother with the label.

Even bottled water has a "best by" date on it.

So truuuuue. The ones I really hate are the "Sell by -" We currently have milk that had to be Sold by this week, but do we have to Drink it by this week?

it really depends on the food. can goods, in mayo, to oil has probably gone rancid (a lesson I learned from putting some mayo from an unopened jar in my grandmother's pantry . . . dated "best used by 2002"

*can goods are pretty much good as long as the can is not bloated or dented.
