Rantings From An Angry American

Sep 12, 2006 17:14

Never in a million years did I think I would be writing a post like this.  I had been neglecting my LJ for some time now and figured an entry was way past due..you know, one of those nice, benign 'my vacation' type entries. But then, I started reading my friends' entries, and all of that went out of the window.  Right now I am in shock, more than a ( Read more... )

Avey, I understand why you feel like this, but honestly, you can't expect Kefer to feel like you. First of all, it is not his country, which makes it different. Second of all, he didn't lost a friend while you did, so things are very, very different for you.

Terrorism is horrible but it happens all over the world. Innocent people get killed everywhere. You can't expect people to actively care about every terrorist attack anywhere.

True, remembrance is important, but it shouldn't have to be milked out as an excuse to invade other countries.

I hardly think that a moment on a radio station is 'milking out' anything. You are right, though, it is not his country, thus the level of caring is not the same; I understand that. I suppose it was just the cavalier way the post was written, it touched a very sore spot in me. Again, you are right, it happens all over the world..and I have a strong sneaking suspicion that those people 'care' very much. Unless your country has been invaded, it is a very hard feeling to understand. However, that does not give anyone the right, in my opinion at least, to downplay what happened and whine because it is remembered.

To use reasoning from my daughter, we weren't there for the Holocaust, World War II, or when the space shuttle crashed in 1983 (to name a few) but we still care and commerate them as tragedies. Why should this be any different?

It was a tragedy, and it will be remembered, however, 9/11 is more than a tragedy. It is the start of many things and used as an excuse for many things. Remembering 9/11 isn't about the victims and their families alone. For a week I've seen teasers for 9/11 documentaries, news-items, speeches and whatnot. If one is fed up with the whole circus at one point I can wholly understand that.

Again, I fail to see where documentaries, etc constitute a 'circus', but maybe that is just me.

Hear Hear, well said.

Its not my country either, but certain things cross borders like values, and a way of life.

I understand where you're coming from, Avey, and I totally respect your opinion for saying the things you did. Because it did touch a sore spot.

I'm not American, but I remember the 9/11 events all too well. I was in 7th grade and it was something shocking to see. I cried that day, cried for seeing something so awful and so ...unhumane (i don't know if that's even a word), some people were confused as to why I was crying because it was not my country, but it has nothing to do with nationalities, it has to do with our essence as humans. And I personally believe that terrorism affects anyone with morals and soul...so I do understand your indignation.

Exactly, Nels, and thank you. It's not about 'country' or race or religion or any of that. It is a basic human essence and that was violated in a very major way. As I've stated before, I am not Jewish nor African American nor a million other things, but I can sympathize and empathize (perhaps even more importantly) to their history and the wrongs perpetuated by others against them, both past and present. Terrorism isn't wrong just because it'happened to me', but because it happens..period.
