In all the years that followed Tom Riddle never loved another woman as he had loved Merope Gaunt.
His love for her had been a lie, an enchantment, a spell she cast. Even so it was deeper and richer then whatever love he was capable of on his own.
Sometimes he wished he had not sent her away when he learned of her deception. That instead he had accepted her illusions and spent the rest of his life like an lotus eater languishing in the bliss of dreams.
It would have been false but his happiness would have been real.

Seducers lie. They show their most alluring sides and keep the rest in shadow. Merope did not understand seduction. She seduced crudely with potions and charms out of misguided love. In the end she sabotaged her efforts by revealing the truth.
After that he could not look at her.
It was not her face that disgusted him. He could remember loving her face. It was that she had taken away his will. She had raped him with her witchcraft.
The child inside her was a portion of his soul she had taken by force.
He could only hate them both.
