Oh!!!Well,the Trovatore is supposed to have one of the most illogical and contorted libretti of all Verdi's operas,and therefore presumably of all 19th century opera.(Although I would definitely exclude Wagner from that,because there's nothing in all literature as unnecessarily long-winded as the Ring,but as he wrote them all himself,and in German, which is deemed to be a SERIOUS language,it's common opinion to overlook the fact that none of it makes much sense,and says everything five times anyway.)Anyway,to get back to the Trovatore,the bit I was referring to,which everyone says could never happen,is when Azucena,who is a Gipsy (and a Mezzo-soprano)tells Manrico,the tenor,who is at least up till now supposed to be her son,that the old Count Di Luna,the father of the present one,the baritone, a long time ago burnt her mother at the stake,as punishment presumably for the heinous crime of being a Gipsy.To avenge her,Azucena kidnapped the count's son,and prepared a pire for him,then went into a trance and awoke only to find she had
