One of yesterday's Midsomer episodes was particularly pleasing, because we both grew up near the Thames, in Berkshire and Oxfordshire.
I'm not sure where Midsomer is supposed to be - I know some of the scenes are Bucks as well as Oxfordshire.
Hurrah for Freeview that gives us these excellent repeats!

At the risk of sounding stupid... is Midsomer not supposed to be in Somerset, regardless of where it's filmed? That's what I've always assumed, just from the name. I'll have to recalibrate my mental map if it's not!

Could be - but that regatta looked very much like a Thames event!
Which river would it be (supposed to be) in Somerset?

I used to watch the early seasons/serials of Midsomer--they were shown over here on PBS's Mystery! I haven't had cable in donkey's years, so I forget about things, until I wander into the DVD section of any good store.

I had heard that the series kind of went downhill as it went along. What do you think? I certainly enjoyed what I have seen, but then I'm rather fond of British murder mysteries. Grew up on Christie, love Sayers, Marsh, and the more modern woman authors these days.

I think that most series "go doenhill" after a while. Even Morse got a bit silly when they started making the "non-book" episodes.
I know many of the settings in Midsomer - for example, I lived for a time near the Lions at Bledlow, and Thame, which have been used in several episodes.
We are watching old episodes of Heartbeat - and that has definitely deteriorated - I noticed this especially when I watched a new one and an old one on consecutive days.
Another idiocy that prevents me watching he longterm series, e.g. Coronation Street and Eastenders and Hollyoaks is the way that they copy each other - one week the front cover of the TV magazines advertized the same incident in three different series - and some of the characters even had the same names!
