That seems like a fundamental danger of Tarantino's method - how to refer to clumsy or contrived sources without making a clumsy, contrived film. Both the Kill Bill and Grindhouse films seem to have been attempts to tussle with this. And the excruciating "Italian" scene later says it all so succinctly.
