Whilst watching The Tudors yesterday, kakurowski remarked that Henry didn't marry as many times as Elizabeth Taylor. Being a total prog-rock geek, I immediately imagined:
I agree Wakeman never impressed me all that much as a solo. However your concept albums, to me anyway a greater coherence. The E. Taylor concept is awesome.
The Elizabeth Taylor reference is very timely considering everyone is talking about her now. But nowhere near as many are talking about Wakeman, so it remains a joke for the die-hard. :o)
It's a testament to the creative power of collaboration when you see how someone's ensemble work is superior to their solo efforts. I own a lot of RW's solo records, but generally prefer his output with Yes.
As a keyboard player myself, I've always found a lot of interesting stuff happening on Rick Wakeman's solo work. It may not be as rock-oriented or have the mass appeal of Yes, but he definitely helped to put keyboards (and keyboard players) on the rock-n-roll map. If Six Wives didn't have a special place in my life, I would never have bothered with the parody cover.
