*eyeroll* This computer is going to be the end of me... newest thing? Sometimes it won't start up. At all. -_- I had it hibernated, which it usually is when it's off, and I pressed the power button to turn it back on and the power light and capslock light (I guess - it's the capital A in a little lock, and it lights up when I turn on capslock) ( Read more... )

Does this happen when you're running it from battery power, or from AC?

Both. *sigh*

I am THIS CLOSE to buying a new one. Cept now I'm on Dell's website and they no longer offer laptops with XP and only offer desktops with XP for another 3 days. So now I'm reading up on how to downgrade from VIsta... the legality of which seems to be iffy even though I own XP. -_- Either way I'm contacting Dell to ask for a new XP installation/recovery disk since I don't have one. Then I think I could just load it on to a separate partition from Vista and use it that way, according to what I just read.

Ah.. Laptop batteries lose capacity over time and may need to be replaced.

It sounds like bad RAM, actually. If you have multiple RAM modules, then what you want to do is to test each one independantly by taking the other out. The one that causes the computer to fail to turn on, is the one that needs to be replaced.

I don't understand--why can't you just format the drive with Vista and install XP?

Nah, don't think it's the battery - it didn't work with it plugged in, either, and this battery is relatively new (got it a bit over a year ago, when my first battery gave up).

Hmm. How annoying. *sigh* I don't especially want to go digging inside... may take it to the computer shop or quite frankly may just buy a new one cuz I am fed up to death of this thing and don't want to spend anymore money on it.

Yeah, it says I could do that too, but that it's more complicated...

Macs don't do that! [/bias]

I hope you manage to get a new one, or this one sorted out, or something. It's just one thing after another, isn't it? Ouch. I would NOT want your computer AT ALL, and I'm sorry you've got to deal with.

Do threats of bodily harm work? Has Tony been any help, technological genius that he is?

Sorry. Making light of the situation probably bad at the moment… ^^;

Maybe I should get a Mac... man, so fed up with this! You can put Windows on a Mac, right? But will that just bring along all the same problems?

Think I honestly might just buy a new one this time. o.o But I want XP and it's not available on laptops from Dell anymore. Might call them tomorrow and beg. They still offer desktops with XP, after all.

Though really... this Dell has had a LOT of problems, so dunno if I want another one. Course, a good chunk of those problems likely resulted from me (and the passage of time...), so I guess I can't blame Dell. o.o

Oh, if only Tony were here to help me. :) *pauses to have happy Tony fantasy* Good god I am too in love right now...

Incidentally, did you see the IM/SPN crossover posted recently where the suit is haunted and the boys come to exorcise it? Awesome. Also found a Sam/Dean/Tony smutfic over on Insane Journal, which holyfuckyall. *grin*

You can buy Macs with Vista on them. If you use an Intel-based Mac with OS X on it, you can install XP onto a partition and use launch it with Boot Camp, or something like that; I wouldn't expect to use it as a primary OS, though. You won't escape software and hardware problems by switching to Macs (as much as Apple marketing wants you to believe.) :\

Lol, yeah, so I've heard... Ryan's dad who fixes computers says he gets just as many Macs as PCs brought to him...
