I'm not cutting this because this is very important to me.

A couple years ago, my friend M introduced me to this amazing animated show called Avatar: The Last Airbender. I was visiting him, he showed me the first episode, and I ended up watching something like four or five episodes in a row before we went for dinner ( Read more... )

oh wow o_0. It's still initial casting so there's still hope? It looks like they're casting for the next high school musical movie or something D:

I've seen only about 12 episodes of the series, it's in my to watch list, so I'm not that emotionally invested in it yet but if what you said about the cartoon makers making sure they get the cultural referance right is true, then waaay to undermine the whole premise Shyamalan X(

gah, this is the first i'd heard of an avatar movie. i don't think "incredibly disappointing" is strong enough to describe the initial casting choices. "unsurprising" is even sadder. "inexcusable" is more like it. v_v I have to save the rest of my irritation and outrage for after finals (brief study break to read this post!!)

after finals...i think i might get around to writing one of those letters.

it's like a knife to chest to the love i have for avatar. T_T

Wow, I know about this franchise and have been meaning to watch it, but haven't had the time. And I'm still appalled. I wonder if the creators of the franchise have any say at all in terms of the rights they gave to the director, because damn *____*

That's really offensive. Really offensive and insulting to the fans of the show, most of whom, I suspect would rather not watch the movie if its going to whitewash their characters and narratives like that. I agree. Bullshit has been called >_<

. . . also, some of the people on the comment threads on that link are completely moronic. Surprise.

I am so sorry :( I just hope that someone realizes what a clusterfuck that is :(

I've not seen Airbender, but it's long been on my list of shows to eventually watch. I'd see sets being sold in stores and always want to pick one up, but I never really knew where to start. That being said, I feel your pain about the casting choices even though I don't know the show. And even if the show is technically not set on Earth, despite being Asian influenced, it still doesn't have to have an ALL white cast. Even color blind casting (a la Grey's Anatomy) could have worked. Even if it was Brown People of No Discernible Race like on SGA with Rachel Luttrell and Jason Mamoa. But I also hope that people don't hate *too* much for the sake of the young actors being cast. It would suck and be unfair for ppl to say mean stuff about them because they're white. I mean, even if the points are totally valid about it being white-washed, don't throw that on a kid who probably doesn't even know what that means yet.
