Notebook or Netbook? Help me decide...

The laptop's performance has been degrading pretty much since I got it back from being fixed in October (remember when I was offline for almost a month and a half?) and I finally took it back to the Geek Squad who packed it up to send out for "Repair or Replace".

At this point I'm rather hoping that it will be Replace because the Repair option ( Read more... )

netbook, computer repair, laptop

Oh gosh, I'm with you about Acers.

I bought a Toshiba laptop a few months ago for $359 and it's fantastic. Great price (add another #75 for extended warranty), good solid computer. It might be a little heavy for your needs.

Looks like there's still a lot of 15-inch screen laptops for good prices: http://www.frys.com/search?query_string=&sort=price&order=asc&order_by=p03a&cat=-63998&pType=pDisplay&from=0&to=24

though it looks like most have to be picked up, not sure if there's a Fry's in your area.

While I was there, I tried out a bunch of netbooks and decided they were just too small (both in terms of physical size and memory/hard drive) to suit me. I found the keyboards really cramped though I think that's probably just a matter of getting used to its dimensions.

Good luck!

If you do more than use it for word processing and checking your email then you don't want a netbook. It doesn't have enough memory. Get the notebook. they are great for going to Panera and working on a story and checking your email (or listening to music) on the lunch break but if you want to do more than that you really need more memory than those things have. The screen is also VERY small. They keyboard is almost impossible to use (You'd probably want to tote a full sized keyboard with you). Notebook. Hands down.

I recommend a Dell Inspiron. I've had two including my current one. I think the Netbook is only good as an additional computer, not your main one. Here's a good Dell in your price range if the replace it -

From your description above, it looks like you use the laptop less for internet and internet-related media, and more for writing. I'm the same, which is why I bought a laptop instead of a netbook. I think the netbook is geared more towards people who want a lot of internet portability.

Dell is running some sort of promotion on the Inspiron line, btw. Good luck!

I'd recommend any of the Sony VAIO laptops. My old laptop (a Compaq) needed to be replaced a few months ago and I was very reluctant to switch, but I managed to get a good deal on a Sony and so far I'm impressed with it. It's very light to carry around (not sure of the exact weight, though), and the keyboard is quite comfortable to use. :)
