Crumbling pieces of my heart

We go from astonishing moments of memory to childlike behavior, or at least, what-me-worry behavior. Either he can't hear, or he doesn't know what's going on around him. He has no clue what he did yesterday. None. Yesterday was a total and complete change in routine, and he can't remember a single thing about it until I give him many, many cues.
