A lot of it for me is exactly about feeling connected to Europe (and the wider world - I'd be ok in principle with some sort of global parliament a la science fiction, though I appreciate it's nicer as an optimistic thought than a practical reality

You could ask yourself the question if the vote now was about joining up rather than leaving would this argument prevent you from voting to join, as similar (but probably not as much) work would be required. As this is such a long term decision anything that is likely to only cause short term pain (<5 years) shouldn't really be an issue. I'm quite fond of these thought experiments as they clarify my own thinking quite a bit.
I know the answer to that question - if it was about *joining* the EU then I would have hopes / expectations that the necessary work would lead to better things for us as a company, ie joining a bigger market, having fewer internal barriers within that market, etc. You're right that it's not about the shorter term hit and I didn't mean it to be, but the fact that I can *see* what some of the immediate hit looks like (in my area) makes it quite a visceral thing for me.
