I remain baffled by the narrative choice to kill the only interesting character off at the end of the first movie. Though it does explain a lot.

Agreed. I'm glad at least some of the EU authors have given Qui-Gon some love, but Episode II would have been infinitely more interesting if he'd survived to be in it.
