I wouldn't donate the G1 stuff to a place where children will play with them. Not just because they're valuable and I shudder to think of what would happen to them, but because they don't stand up to modern safety standards. Plus, things like the castle get so brittle with age. Pieces will snap, leaving sharp edges.
I understand your not wanting to sell them. It can be a hassle. So what I'd suggest is to give them to a charity that would auction them as part of a fundraiser. You might even be able to get help with that. I know there are some pretty big pony meets in the UK, and I seem to remember them having charity drives before. You might poke around and see.
