you can get a word count widget thingy from the nano site--find the drop down menu on the nano site to "fun stuff" and it'll say word count widgets or word count api or something like that.
once you input and and "make" your word bar, the html will show up. :)
Also, I don't bother to use the word count validator until I'm ready to win. Up til then I just update with what Word says, lol. I also make sure i write an extra 500-1000 words, just in case, because the one year NaNo's validator gypped me out of 400 words.
