Why is it that people cannot tell the difference between opposing illegal immigration and racism?

If I were mugged by a black man and I then tell the police that my mugger was black, I am not being racist.

Neither would the police be racist for asking a nearby black man questions regarding the incident.

I have, in my life, worked with a number of people who were in this country illegally. They were Canadians, and mostly whiter then I am. They are just as illegal as the Mexicans, yet you don't see someone demanding that everyone who looks Canadian along the Northern boarder show their papers. The only reason my Grandfather was a legal immigrant when he came to this country was that he was white and English speaking, so there was no limit on him. Had he been Mexican instead of Canadian, he would not have been able to enter the country legally. So yes, targeting immigration from brown folks when you are not putting a proportional effort into stopping illegal immigration of white folks is about as racist as you can get. It is especially troubling when you remember that those brown folks are the descendants of people who were on this continent long before our white ancestors came to enslave them.

That's odd, since it is usually the other way around, with Americans trying to exploit the Canadian system like the Mexicans exploit the US. However, I don't wish to dismiss your experience, even though it is irrelevant. If you are correct, why didn't you report it? Is your permissiveness toward illegal immigration from Mexico some combination of guilt for having tolerated Canadian illegals & relief that since you are so far North it is someone else's problem ( ... )
