I haven't mentioned it here at all, but I'm in the process of...not a diet, more a lifestyle change. I'm not eating empty carbs or sugar as much as possible, and trying to exercise more. So far, I've lost nine pounds, and about an inch and a half on my waist. So...anyway, that has put me in an awkward wardrobe position as we head into spring/ ( Read more... )

Look into doing a wrap-skirt, too! They can also be converted to be worn as dresses, if they're long enough. :) Even if you don't have enough of one fabric, a patchwork one could be just as adorable.

Hmm, yes I'd forgotten I have a wrap skirt I could use as a pattern, so to speak!

I did the same thing diet-wise, starting last fall, actually following South Beach to teach me how to eat. I'm down 40 pounds so far. I made due with clothes from my fabulous local thrift shop. That way, the dollar pants I couldn't use a month later weren't that much of a loss!

But I wish I could make my own stuff. You're lucky there!

Wow, congratulations! It sounds like that is really working for you. :)

I don't actually sew "normal clothes" most of the time. I find it boring and uninspiring. I prefer making historical costumes and beautiful corsets, but at the price of a drawstring skirt I actually like (, most run $50 or more, ugh!), I can make my own out of the fabric I like, ie, beautiful washed dupioni silk. Nothing against cotton, but I want something that can be both casual or dressy, as we usually have several events over the course of the summer to attend that are a bit more formal. Weddings, etc. It isn't as fun as making a gown, but I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying it. :)

Which pattern will you be using for the skirt?

Pattern? LOL. I've made so many skirts for various costumes, I don't use a pattern anymore unless I'm going for something really different or complicated. I just measure, cut, and sew. I made one recently, for example, with three yards of washed dupioni silk. I measured the length to approximately 33 inches, cut, and serged the two raw edges together. Then I serged the part that would be gathered into the waistband, gathered it to a circumference that will fit going over the bust or hips, and attached the waistband. I like to use the selvage for my hem if it looks nice enough, as that's less sewing. All in all, I can whip a skirt like this out in a couple of hours, start to finish. :)
