Knitsters of Charity Poll

Sep 04, 2007 14:50

Hello All,

I wanted to follow up with more detailed info about the Knitsters of Charity order, as promised.

Who are the Knitsters of Charity?
  • an non-religious order of diverse people that have both an interest in community service and crafting
  • folks who have want to be active within their community, but lack the time and proper contacts
  • people who like doing larger-scale service projects and enjoy working in groups from time to time
  • crafty folks - we aren't just limiting to knitting, although fiber arts are near and dear to us, as well as the friends and families of crafty folks - the more, the merrier
  • former scouts, APO members, and any others that have a service itch that needs to be scratched
  • people in or near this tri-state area (PA-DE-NJ). For now, most events will be centered in Philly.
  • a love of plaid skirts ala Catholic school style (that will be our "habit" for certain events)
  • You?
Our aim is to plan and facilitate a few service projects each year and organize kind souls that would like to be a part of it. We hope that by only planning a handful each year, no one will be overwhelmed (we're all busy, no?), everyone can contribute on the project that they are available for and we can offer different ways for members to contribute. For example, Anj and I have been doing the American Cancer Society bike-a-thon each year. Not everyone is prepared to do a long bike ride, so we would organize a team of folks to volunteer at one of the rest stops along the way. We are planning a mix of projects, so hopefully something will grab you. Here's what's on tap for our 2007-2008 season.

  • Fall - AIDS Walk Philly (October 21st)
  • Fall/Winter - Project Linus (http://mysite.verizon.net/vze1xt3o/projectlinusphiladelphiacountychapter/index.html)
  • Fall/Winter - small blankets for Animal Shelters
  • Fall/Winter - any sized knit/crocheted hats/mittens/scarves for Women Against Abuse (transitional shelter for women and children)
  • February - Annual KoC planning party and meet-and-greet
  • Spring - Punk Rock Flea market (sell member-made items - proceeds to benefit some wonderful organization)
  • Summer - American Cancer Society bike-a-thon and HERA
So, if you think that you may be interested, please fill out my little poll! And feel free to send anyone who would be interested our way!

If you are interested in participating in the AIDS Walk, please stay tuned. Personally, I'm not interested in doing the actual walk, but to have a volunteer team (I've given out certificates at the end of the walk), but will set-up a team if there are willing walkers...
