I've been reading X-Men: First Class slash lately. I'm a bit out of the loop, but it seems like this is the latest boom fandom, correct? And I have to say - yes. I get it. Very much so

I watched the film whenever it came out and it was probably the second best film I've seen this year. But then I've seen about six films this year (one of them twice) so make of that what you will. I went in with incredibly low expectations (which is my default for any Hollywood film) and was surprised that I enjoyed it for the most part, especially as I can't stand whatsisface who plays Charles Xavier.
I liked Emma until she lost direction and I liked the Blue Girl whose name escapes me (Mystique?) and I liked Erik, though I remember at the time that I had big problems with certain aspects of logic in his story. His backstory wasn't handled as badly as it could have been IMO for a film of this type, not that that is a recommendation.
Uh, I guess stick to the fic. Or watch the DVD and skip to the scenes in the middle of the film where all the slashy bits are and forget the rest.
Which was the best film you've seen this year, then? *curious*

Yeah, that does help in some cases! I default to that a lot, myself... definitely when it comes to superhero movies, and several other genres. I haven't seen any of the actors before, though, so I have no opinions on them, which is probably a good thing.

Yeah. I think I know what you mean; the lack of entirely plausible motivation / actions comes through rather well in some of the fanfic, and the better authors do great things with it. :-) But as a flaw in the movie, this would definitely bother me rather a lot.
His backstory wasn't handled as badly as it could have been IMO for a film of this type, not that that is a recommendation.... This is, in fact, exactly what I'm afraid of. The thing is, I fully expect a film of this type to handle this kind of backstory so incredibly horribly that I don't have the right words

The best film of the year for me was Senna, the documentary movie about Ayrton Senna's life and death. Everything else has been fairly bog-standard.
I find it so cool that people can get into a fandom without having seen/read the source. One of my friends actually posted about this recently, thinking she was weird to go into a fandom 'backwards', as it were. She loves Grimm fic but hasn't seen the show (and probably won't watch it, since she's German and said the amount of incredibly crappy German that gets flung around in the show would bug the hell out of her).
I haven't heard of Senna - which is not surprising, I'm never really apprised of cinematic goings-ons. *g* I'll have to check it out!
I quite often get into fandoms through fanfic - it's my usual method of approach, in fact, simply because fanfic is usually more important to me than canon. I am a fanfic fan far more than a media fan. :-) But I do think it's the more unusual approach, and in some corners of fandom, it's frowned upon... I am all in favor, though!
I so feel your friend about Grimm. As I wrote in the footnote above, I only watched 10 minutes of the pilot, and there is an inscription on a sword which is only partly legible... and it has an embarrassingly elemental mistake on it that made me headdesk and roll my eyes, because it telegraphs *exactly* what kind of painfully stupid linguistic atrocities the rest of this series will have in store

I have been drowning in the fanfic. The movie is so cheesy tbh >.> and I can see all of the flaw above. Fic has helped me see another layer of the characters that I didn't glean from the movie by just watching it XD I doubt your enjoyment of fanfic would be ruined? Let's just say I think the fanfic's good enough...? :D I'm not usually interesting in western fandoms, like, spn I never got into mainly because I was pretty much too chicken to watch the show and inception, in which I read A/E, doesn't give me as much satisfaction as when I read erik/charles >.> ALSO, OH GOD THE CRACK HAS BEEN ABSOLUTELY LOVELY ♥
The fanfic is so lovely! I'm drowning in it too at the moment - and very happily so. :-) It's been too long since I've found such a rich treasure-trove of excellent, long slash stories.
Awww, babe, SPN isn't that scary. But that said, it also isn't really worth the trouble. There are some very nice bits in the earlier seasons, but the show was never well-written, and jumped the shark entirely before too long. All in my opinion, of course. ;-)
YES, the crack is great too! And the AUs! And the fix-its... *sigh*
I am a little touchy when it comes to the portrayal of issues like Magneto's background; this really could ruin the entire fandom for me. And I have no faith at all that amovie of this kind will be able to handle such a subject appropriately, so... yeah, I'm thinking I'll just submerge happily in the fanfic and forget about the movie entirely. Or maybe skip through to some nice bits...
