I should at least finish it first.

Writing AU fanfic for your own unfinished original novel - odd or not?

I don't even know.

Good point! :-) Plus, I could always sell it as a characterization exercise of sorts. Yeah, I think I'll be going with that. *g*

A friend just started rping in the universe of her unfinished YA novel.

I understand the impulse! But how can other people RP with her - did she write a primer?

I pretty much do this in my head any time I make up an elaborate story? There'll be several AU tangents to the way the story actually ends up going.

Ooh yes, all that unutilized plot potential! I'm sure most writers do this, at least in their heads.

But writing it down? I'm just feeling a little guilty because the actual story isn't even finished yet, so I should be working on that.

Oh well, the AU isn't very long, anyway. Fortunately I did have that much self-control. ;-)

I've done that too. >.> But yeah, I suppose when you haven't even finished the actual story is a bit early to be writing down your AUs.

ALL THE FUCKING TIME. (Actually it's more common for all my characters to crossover into other original works. I've given up and declared them all in the same universe)

*g* I know so many authors who do this - and I absolutely understand the reluctance to let go of beloved characters. I don't think I've ever done this kind of crossover myself, though, probably because my characters wouldn't fit well into the other fictional worlds, and/or would despise each other, and/or would not have a reason to come into contact at all.

Sometimes you just can't not!

Yes! It just - happened. One minute I was thinking "well, this would be the absolutely obvious AU", and then I was like "hm, but how exactly would one approach this and how could it work", and then... yeah.

Seems normal to me.

:-) I just have a bit of a bad conscience because I haven't even finished writing the main story. But, yeah... it was impossible to resist, somehow.
