Mall plans failed. Everything was either casual-spring or looked like it had escaped from a curtain factory. Attempted to assuage my grumpiness with grocery shopping at Harvest.

I have already been informed by the bride that I am expected to come in a dress :)

Though I did see a picture of this *awesome* steampunk-sari setup. (But given the hangups I sometimes get about appropriation when wearing qipau I don't think I'll do anything other than admire the idea.)

I sort of like the steampunk idea - but doing formal female steampunk takes effort. (Lots of people I know out here do Victorian dance events so they have ball gowns, but I certainly don't.)

*grin* Someday, when I have time, I really must revisit the idea.

What type of dress are you looking for? I might be able to suggest stores.

Ooh, that'd be appreciated. I tend to only buy dresses accidentally or under duress :) It's an evening event with guys' expected dress level at suit, so I was thinking something cocktail-dress-ish?

You could probably do cocktail or something a little more casual.

Formal but simple dresses: J Crew. Many are online only, not in stores, especially the ones in their "weddings and parties" category. (sort of pricey)

H&M might have something, and they're inexpensive.

Summery-but-not-too-casual: Ann Taylor Loft (can be sort of boring)

Classy, feminine dresses: Anthropologie (not my style but they're pretty - though I just glanced at their current selection and they look more summery than you might want.)

There used to be a little store in Harvard Sq with some gorgeous but expensive dresses. But I can't find it on yelp so I bet it's gone. :(
