So, enter Lambert! I really like their contest at the start, and the contrast between their different attitudes toward religion. So, Lambert is a sort of pre-Renaissance man? or a Thomist avant la lettre? That makes sense to me; reason-based theology was definitely around in the 12th century (see Abelard). Very interesting talk between Martin and Guy, with the glimpse of Ghislaine's family history; does Martin now want Guy to become a monk? I'm amused by the note of incredulity is his report that Isabella is a pliant ward at the abbey. And finally, great conversation between Lambert and Isabella about books.

I see Lambert as essentially a scholastic in training at this point. It's interesting you brought up Abelard, because he comes up later in this story (in an indirect way), but yes, definitely from the school that is more bound to dialectic reasoning than to orthodoxy.

I also see Lambert as being more interested in scholarly pursuits than Guy, and in a way, the abbey gives him a chance to live that life, just as it's a bit of a refuge for Guy and Isabella.

Once again, thanks for reading. I really appreciate the effort it takes to read every chapter and comment accordingly.

Ah, okay -- looking forward to the Abelard reference!

Yes, I totally get that. Makes sense to me!
