How about we stick to valid arguments?

As most of you know, I am, generally speaking, an Obama fan.  I voted for him, and I think he's done a lot of good things so far.  Having said that, I have to admit that I'm not 100% certain where I stand on the health care overhaul debate.  I'm absolutely certain that our system for providing health care needs to be overhauled, but I'm not sure ( Read more... )

Three things:

First, I agree with your post so, SO much. I'm tired of hearing the ridiculous arguments (or lack of them) being thrown around re: the entire healthcare debate. Half of the Repub. disagreements stem from either rage at the election results or just plain bigotry, which makes their arguments useless anyway.

Second, I read an interesting article discussing healthcare as an issue and where it's shown up politically in the last 80-100 years. It's worth a read, especially as rebuttal to those who think we've got "plenty of time" to put off reform of any kind.

And lastly, just because it's so spot-on, I have a relevant Daily Show clip. Because those folks have been A+ satirists all year, and deserve props. :)

As always, spot on with the Daily Show clip! The article was interesting. I knew about the universal health care attempts by both Roosevelts, but wasn't aware of the entire history. Thanks for the info!

On the other side, I'm tired of attacks made by proponents of the health care reform bills claiming that opponents are racists and Nazis.

In this article, a professor claims that 'personal responsibility' is a racist code phrase.

The people that I hear who are bringing race into the debate are democrats who are calling conservatives racists. I don't hear anyone that I would consider rational complaining that this is a plan made up by a black president.

I am of the opinion that the federal government shouldn't be in the business of providing health care or insurance to the general population.

Are there whack jobs who share that view with me? Sure. You might think that free compulsory education is a good idea, but that doesn't mean your a Marxist.

I think painting opponents with a board brush and claiming that they're a bunch of bigots goes too far.

I agree with you, it's ridiculous and irresponsible to call people Nazis just because they oppose health care reform. Conversely, it's ridiculous and irresponsible for opponents of health care to use the same tactic. I am, of course, referencing Rush Limbaugh's statement that proponents of health care reform are akin to Nazis. A statement, by the way, that has been picked up and supported by many conservatives.

For anyone on either side to make such comparisons is reprehensible.
