Plus, of course, Germany - both West and East, in different ways - has relatively recent, fairly direct experience of Russian intention, that is not remembered fondly.

Canada...we've got some of the strengths of the German set-up - re: fake news, hate speech and other legal measures - some of which Harper made some effort to weaken while he was in office. He wasn't able to wipe it all away before finally being shown the door last year, but the weaknesses he introduced are still in play.

Also, we're still right next door to the blasted elephant.
